A closer look reveals a striking church carved into the valley's rocks

Located about 15 kilometers from the town center of Yeşilhisar in Kayseri, Soğanlı Valley is described as one of the gateways to the Cappadocia region, known for its rock formations and structures carved into the rock.

The valley is home to numerous rock-cut caves and shelters, as well as churches and monasteries. The rock-cut spaces on the slopes were used as cemeteries during the Roman period, while from the 4th century onward, Soğanlı became one of the important centers of Christianity.

Around 50 rock churches are believed to have been built in the valley, eight of which are currently accessible to visitors. These include Karabaş Church, Domed Church, Tahtalı (Saint Barbara) Church, Serpentine Church, Hidden Church, Tokalı Church, Balik Church and Geyikli Church.

Among these churches, Domed Church stands out on the northern slope of the valley with its cylindrical form carved into volcanic tuff. Reaching approximately 50 meters in height, the church is believed to have once had seven levels. Today, only two levels remain following earthquakes.

Dating to the early 10th century, the structure has a section known as a crypta on its lower level. The church rises above a windowed section and is topped with a dome that ends in a cone-shaped form. Some of the decorative elements on the dome's drum have also survived.

The rock-cut churches of Soğanlı Valley feature frescoes depicting various scenes from the Bible, many of which reflect styles dating from the 10th to the 12th centuries.
